tips to get your child to brush their teeth Arlington

Healthy teeth and gums are important at every stage of life. At Stephen Ratcliff Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Arlington we are committed to the dental health of our young patients, and honored whenever parents demonstrate their trust by making us a part of their child’s wellness team.

Kids need to learn proper dental care at an early age. Even before they’re toddlers their dental health is important, and it’s up to parents to keep their teeth and gums clean.

As kids start getting a little older, parents can set the right example by taking good care of their own teeth and gums. A big part of how children learn is through observation.

Sometimes kids can be fussy about their dental care, so here are a few strategies for getting them to brush:

Reward their behavior. If they brush, you can give them an extra ten minutes playing their favorite video game or watching TV.

Play copycat. We mentioned how kids learn through observation; ask them to mimic your own brushing. A lot of kids love it!

Make it fun. Kids respond well if you make it enjoyable. Play their favorite song as they brush, or sing it yourself!

Don’t overdo it. As kids grow up it will be more important to brush for at least two minutes. But when they’re little, the main thing is to establish good habits. Brushing is the important thing, and it’s okay to keep it short.

Good oral care during childhood gets your youngster started on a lifetime of dental health, and family dentistry from Stephen Ratcliff Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Arlington can help.
